Exposure map
The screen uses general categories for account ownership, foreign entities, investment types, trust or gift facts, prior-year filing history, notice status, and urgency.
Public intake boundary
Do not enter account numbers, passport numbers, tax IDs, returns, statements, entity documents, or trust documents in a public diagnostic. Those records belong in a secure portal after qualification and written scope.
Routing options
The result can route to FBAR review, Form 8938, Form 5471, Form 5472, Form 8865, Form 8858, Form 8621, Forms 3520/3520-A, or international penalty triage.
Diagnostic questions
- Did the taxpayer have any non-U.S. bank, brokerage, securities, pension, insurance, mutual fund, or similar financial accounts during the year, including accounts with signature authority only?
- Did the combined maximum value of all foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 at any point during the calendar year?
- Does the taxpayer hold foreign financial assets such as foreign securities, foreign entity interests, foreign funds, foreign pensions, or cash-value foreign insurance or annuity contracts?
- Which Form 8938 threshold may apply based on filing status, residence, year-end value, and maximum value during the year?
- Are there foreign corporations, partnerships, disregarded entities, trusts, gifts, inheritances, or PFIC-like funds that may require forms beyond FBAR and Form 8938?
- Have FBAR, Form 8938, or other international information returns been filed in prior years, and were any accounts, assets, entities, or signers added or removed?
- If prior filings were missed, late, incomplete, or inconsistent, has the matter been reviewed for penalty exposure and counsel-sensitive issues before any corrective filing is made?
- Are the supporting records available, including institution names, account types, ownership or authority details, maximum values, year-end values, and foreign entity or trust documents?
Public intake boundary
Use public diagnostics for high-level issue spotting, deadline awareness, and routing. Do not submit tax returns, notices, K-1s, Social Security numbers, EINs, account numbers, cap tables, legal pleadings, financial statements, or confidential transaction documents through a public form.
International reporting can carry substantial penalties and requires fact-specific review. This diagnostic is preliminary and educational.
